About this deal

His grandparents are Frank's parents Granny Mavis And Granddad Bob that Tom refers to as "The Fossils", while Rita's parents are known as "The Wrinklies". I won't say this book is a brilliant example of its kind, but it certainly deserves to be a hit. It's warm-hearted, and while not having any kind of moral (other than keep your artwork to yourself and/or on the constructive side) it does feature a recognisable situation. Tom certainly is recognisable – as is the very series, with its full-on doodled covers. This one will become recognised as a very enjoyable read.

Tom and Derek are in a band called Dog Zombies, consisting of Tom on guitar, Derek on keyboard, and classmate Norman Watson on drums. Aged around 10 years old, Tom is the younger of the two children of Frank and Rita Gates, and the younger brother of Delia. [4] He attends Oakfield Primary School where he is in Mr Fullerman's Class 5F, under headmaster Mr Keen. Children in his class include Marcus Meldrew (who sits next to and consistently annoys Tom in class), and Amy Porter (who also sits next to Tom, but whom Tom hopes to impress). Also in his year at Oakfield is his best friend Derek Fingle, who also lives next door to him. Tom has a second neighbour, June Jones, that annoys Tom and dislikes his band. Reviews

Top Of The Class (Nearly) is the ninth Tom Gates book and is a delightful read for younger children. I have never read a Tom Gates book before, but I dived headfirst into book 9, incredibly impressed by the fantastic layout of this book. It’s filled with tons of different fonts and different font sizes, there’s drawings of the characters in various situations and it feels like it’s interactive (even though it isn’t). It’s fully immersive and that’s incredible. My grandson loved it . Had previously bought all the Tom Gates books for my 7 year old grandson and from being a reluctant reader he absolutely loved them., so when “Random Acts of Fun” came out it was a no-brainer. He absolutely loves this one as well.” PerryE Eccleshare, Julia (7 Mar 2016). "Why children's books love to celebrate the 'losers' ". The Guardian. Archived from the original on 8 August 2021 . TIPS FOR BEING TOP OF THE CLASS (Sadly…I did NONE of these things.) 1. Stay awake in lessons (it helps.) 2. Don’t draw HILARIOUS pictures of your teachers. 3. AVOID the class bully to stay out of trouble. 4. Don’t let Mum and Dad write ANYTHING in your school planner. 5. Don’t let your grumpy sister Delia BOSS you around. (Technically not a school issue – but still important.) I’m TRYING to get voted onto the school council as well – but thanks to the ABOVE list it’s not exactly going to plan. You don’t actually need to even have read the previous 8 books, because this reads easily by itself (although I WILL be reading the previous 8 books simply because of how amazing this one was). 8-12 year old children will absolutely gobble this up - it’s so easy to digest, with tons of learning opportunities for new words to extend kids’ vocabulary. From the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Best Book for Younger Readers – Red House Children’s Book Award, the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 5 – 12 year-olds and the Blue Peter Best Story Book Award 2013, comes the ninth amazing instalment of this brilliant series!
