About this deal

Some extra life is achieved by Sonicare I believe via the quieter and possibly more efficient motor as well as the automatic power off feature, something Oral-B does not have. It gives the most satisfying cleaning results, even if the actual cleaning differences between each are hard to determine. Meanwhile, at the top end of Oral B’s offering, the latest iO range combines micro-vibrating bristles with Oral-B's dentist-inspired round brush head for fresh, clean and healthier gums. It could be worth waiting a little while longer to save the money, if you feel a more expensive brush will suit you better.

Given that each brush offers more features as you climb up through the range it is not unsurprising that the cost increases too. on this page we’ve included some resources that make it easy to tell the differences between the various Sonicare models available.Whilst the evidence is that there is a fairly certain small benefit, whether this will make much difference in the mouth is unclear. The first thing to be aware of, if you are not already, is that the 6100 is the most premium and feature rich, with the 5100 below that and the 4100 being the base model within the ProtectiveClean family. I don’t believe it is a feature we are all crying out for, but as things go, it is a nice addition and makes further use of the microchip in the brush head.

The 4100 is available in 6 color options, white, black, sugar rose, deep pink, azure blue and dark forest compared to the 1, white gray color option of the 1100. Keep the power on/off button pressed until you hear a series of three short beeps (after 7 seconds). More cleaning modes, a pressure sensor and Bluetooth connectivity on models that are cheaper than Sonicare, allowing those with a restricted budget to get more for their money. Yes, the 5100 and 6100 have a bit more going on because of the additional cleaning modes and brushing intensities, but they are of a rounded design, with a smooth to the touch paint finish. With the main differences between each now explained, I think it is worth highlighting some of the ways in which they are similar that I have not already mentioned.

For a broader comparison of things such as brushing modes and replacement brush heads, check out our comparisons hub page. It is safe to leave either brand of brush on charge for a prolonged period of time but for frequent travellers, the extended life of the Sonicare may be preferred. Whatever your decision, make sure it is one you are happy with and do let me know what you go for and why.

The latter is perfect if you've recently had dental work or are waiting for an appointment to tackle a toothache or gum issue. Whilst this is by no means essential, it adds an extra dimension to the cleaning experience and allows you to tweak the power to be more appropriate and comfortable for you. So, whilst the studies may suggest Oral-B is better, if someone used a Sonicare with the correct technique, compared to an Oral-B user with the incorrect technique, the Sonicare would likely perform better for that user. Sonicare offers an Easy-Start mode which increases the power of the brush over the first 14 cleans, easing in a new user. The 4100 offers just 1 cleaning mode (Clean), compared to the 3 modes (Clean, White and Gum Care) available on the 5100 and 6100.All models within the 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 Series have a lot of similarities, including the same handle size, weight and battery. That doesn’t mean Philips Sonicare is one to be underestimated though, boasting the number one selling power toothbrush in the US in 2001. Another notable difference is that the brush motor offers 31,000 brush movements per minute, compared to the 62,000 of the ProtectiveClean.

The 4000 Series offers a little less choice, with just 1 brushing mode, but 2 different brushing intensities. I have no real confidence in your review if you cant provide the reality of expense for simply brushing teeth! One problem many people encounter when switching from a manual toothbrush to an electric is improper use. To have this effect the waves actually need to be working at a much higher speed, in the ultrasonic range, greater than 20,000 Hz. You will not find the Optimal and Perfect Clean toothbrushes on the shelves of all the major grocers and pharmacies in the USA. In recent years, Oral-B was the winner here, but since Sonicare have introduced BrushSync, I feel they now have more features available on some of their brush handles. Purely ultrasonic brushes should not be used on a day to day basis because they do not remove all the plaque.
